Scale model of Jacques Yves Cousteau’s ocean research ship The Calypso
The Calypso is a legendary ocean research ship that has been at the forefront of marine exploration and conservation for over five decades. Originally built in 1942 as a British minesweeper, the ship was later purchased by French naval officer and explorer Jacques Yves Cousteau in 1950. Cousteau, known as the ‘father of scuba diving,’ saw the potential of the ship to serve as a mobile laboratory for his ocean research and conservation efforts. He spent years transforming the Calypso into a state-of-the-art vessel equipped with cutting-edge technology and equipment to explore the depths of the ocean.
The Calypso was built in the US in 1942 as a minesweeper. She was bought in 1950 by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and after extensive changes and modifications has become a fully equipped ocean research vessel, complete with observation chamber in the stern, oval diving bell, Galaezzi diving chamber, inflatable boat for shallow waters, helicopter and other submarine equipment.
Kit includes plastic hull, laser cut wooden strips, stern tube with shaft, rudder, fittings set, plan and manual.

More about The Calypso
length is 42M, tonnage 360 tons and a top speed of 12 knots.
The Calypso quickly gained fame in the 1950s and 1960s as Cousteau and his team embarked on various expeditions, documenting their findings through films and television shows. The ship became a symbol of adventure and discovery, inspiring people around the world to learn more about the mysteries of the ocean. Cousteau’s passion for marine life and his innovative approach to ocean exploration propelled the Calypso and its crew to new heights.
Equipped with a helicopter, a diving chamber, and a small submarine, the Calypso allowed Cousteau and his team to travel to remote and unexplored areas of the ocean. They conducted groundbreaking research on marine life, underwater ecosystems, and the effects of pollution on the ocean. Cousteau also used the ship as a platform for his conservation efforts, bringing awareness to the importance of preserving the ocean and its inhabitants.
Over the years, the Calypso faced numerous challenges, including a fire in 1996 that caused significant damage to the ship. However, with the help of donations and volunteers, the vessel was restored, and Cousteau continued to use it for his missions until his death in 1997. The ship then went through several owners and underwent multiple renovations, but its legacy as a symbol of ocean exploration and conservation remained.
In 2016, the Calypso was acquired by the Cousteau Society, a non-profit organization founded by Jacques Cousteau himself. The society’s mission is to continue Cousteau’s legacy by promoting marine conservation, education, and research. The Calypso is currently undergoing a major restoration to bring it back to its former glory and will soon embark on new expeditions and educational programs.
The Calypso and Jacques Cousteau have left an indelible mark on the world of ocean exploration. Their groundbreaking research, innovative techniques, and passion for preserving the ocean have inspired countless individuals to appreciate and protect our planet’s most vital resource. The ship continues to serve as a symbol of hope and a reminder that there is still so much to discover and protect in the vast depths of the ocean.
